daemon

Pronounced "[dee-mon]." A background program that runs unattended and is usually invisible to the user, providing important system services. Daemons manage all sorts of tasks, including e-mail, networking, and Internet services. Some daemons are triggered automatically by events to perform their work; others operate at timed intervals.
Because daemons spend so much of their time idle, waiting for something to happen, they do not consume large amounts of system resources.
